The Goodwill Scholarship was awarded to a graduating senior from Wichita South High School at the Senior Award Ceremony on May 19. Her school counselor describes her as follows (the student’s name has been replaced with her initials, DW):
DW is the type of student that can be referred to when providing examples to other students who may be struggling and/or need a peer role model. She has maintained continuous success throughout her high school career, but demonstrated extreme focus and determination during this COVID-influenced year. Despite this rough academic year for her and all students, she managed to graduate mid-term and finish strong.
Her plan is to attend a Historically Black College or University in the Fall, her first choice is Prairie View A&M University, Langston University is her second, and she has been diligent at applying to other HBCU’s as well, increasing her chances and choices of working towards a degree in nursing.
DW has a quiet, but strong confidence and drive that will carry her through life, as well as bring so much to her college career.
A total of $6,500 was awarded.
Funds will be transferred by the school district to the student and her selected HBCU in the Fall of 2021 when her enrollment is confirmed.
