The BAASE program at Wichita South is led by Robert Lacy, a retired police officer and Intervention Specialist at the school. He describes the program:
This is a program geared towards young men of color who maintain a 3.5 GPA, 97% attendance rate and no discipline write ups. The program is very important for the future of these young men.
My idea for these young men is to teach them about confidence, respect, honor, love, peace, professionalism and humbleness as well as how to be respectful and be respected young men in the community and in their school.
I start with “First Impressions”, I want them to feel good about themselves, I want them to project professionalism, something they can use for the rest of their lives.
I was able to obtain a community neighborhood grant from Walmart, then built a partnership with JcPennys. I was able to purchase business suits and ties for 27 young men.
This program has transformed young freshmen into confident young men as was well displayed during the BAASE Kick Off at Wichita State University. These young men were engaged, confident, and presented themselves professionally for both the BAASE Program and South High School.
Funding for these young men to further their education would be greatly appreciated and well represented. Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.
